Reports at the time said agents suspected Thornton was part of a drug flight going to Colombia. However, he accidentally dropped his cocaine in the woods and later came to collect it.

Later this bear was named Pablo EskoBear. The name was inspired by drug lord Pablo Escobar.
Bear died of an overdose

The bear tore the packets of this cocaine and spread it all over the hill area of Fannin County. The bear is believed to have died of a cocaine overdose. Police later found two more bags, both containing a total of about 300 pounds of cocaine.
